This book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping, rubbing and a couple of smal nicks and beginning tears to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are generally clean but with tidemarking to the top half of nearly all the pages. There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front endpaper. Ex- library copy - This is Volume No.65 of the West Bath (Maine) Library Association, with their label on the inside of the back cover. The unusual library label says: "N. B. This book must not be lent out of the subscribers family, and if injured, all damage must be paid to the librarian. No volume can be kept over four weeks ; two weeks additional time will be allowed by having it renewed. A fine of two cents per day will be charged for a book kept over this time. A violation of these rules will result in a loss of membership.". Other than the brown paper wrapper pasted on the inside of the covers, first free end paper torn, and the library bookplate, this is a very good copy.

There is a bookplate on the front and rear paste down and ffe has a repaired 1" tear at lower left bottom. Spine ends are frayed, but maroon and black binding is in fairly good condition. Book is quite tight but a bit cocked. Tips on corners are very slightly bumped. All in all a nice collectible and in quite good shape for a book nearly 145 years old.474 pages + 8 pages of advertisements.

In addition to the love story - and commentary on life in New York city after the Civil War - this is an expression of nostalgia for the loss of family centered rural communities as Stowe had known in New England. Despite the fact that the preface claims that the characters in this novel do not represent any real person. this contains a thinly veiled attack and mockery of suffragist and free love advocate Victoria Woodhull in the character of Audacia Dangereyes.
