Vol. 1 has rubbing on two corners, heavier on one and spine ends just lightly bumped. Vol. 2 has bumping to two corners, spine ends are lightly bumped and a small scrape on the cover where a bit of the board show through..

The author, visiting from England in 1834, wrote "what was to become one of the most famous of all travel diaries - a shrewd, lifely and amusing account. Men of all degrees and all beliefs were delighted to call this wise, witty, dauntless woman friend." Pages are clean, crisp, and unmarked -- probably never read. Each volume has "1838" printed the foot of its title page, with no later years or printings indicated anywhere. However, this is almost certainly the facsimile reprint that Harper's published in 1942 as part of their 125th anniversary celebration. [Unlike the first London edition which appeared in 3 volumes, the First American Edition from Harper's was issued in 2 volumes only; See Howes USIANA]. Both volumes are bound in original green textured cloth, with a printed paper spine label. Each volume still has its original red geometric-pattern Dust Jacket (now protected in removable mylar). [4], 13-276; 239, [4] pp. Both volumes are foxed and damp- stained throughout, lacking front free end papers and flyleaves from both volumes, rear endpaper and flyleaf from volume 2, and 2 leaves of printed matter from the front of volume 1. The covers are lightly spotted and soiled in places and the labels have faded. Still a very good reference copy with the text intact. BMC. Howes M348.

Duodecimos; 276, 239 pages, contemporary embossed floral cloth, modern paper labels Englishwoman's sequel to her SOCIETY IN AMERICA (1837). [ Howes M348; Clark III, 205; Thompson 3156]. "The [two] books of Harriet Martineau contained probably the most important view of the West by an English author during the last years of the pioneer period" - quoted by Hubach p.80. She much preferred Cincinnati to Chicago. She toured Washington and Mt. Vernon and elsewhere on the eastern seaboard. Sizeable portions detail her experiences with slavery in the Southern states.

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) sometimes called "the first modern sociologist;" wrote on history, political economy, and children's literature. Here she penned one of the better American travel books on the mid-19th century. This is a lovely reprint of the First Edition of 1838; there is no publication date, but bibliographers agree it was issued circa 1942. Two volumes, in patterned decorative cloth bindings with paper labels on the spines. Clean texts; 276 pages, with two pages of publisher's adverts for "Important Works" in the front; and 239 pages, with four pages of "Valuable Works" in the rear. Penciled previous-owner signatures on FFEP; some old bookseller notations as well. Lacking a slipcase. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Reprint.. Decorative Cloth. Harriet Martineau (1802 - 1876) was an English author and social theorist. who traveled throughout the eastern United States in 1834-36 and describes her experiences and observations of American society with lively detail and uncommon insight. She observed and commented upon prisons, slavery, education, economics, women in society, in fact, the whole range of American society. Her work is a standard in the literature of American travel as well as on American society in the early nineteenth century. This is the first American edition in the original publisher's paper-covered boards (which are worn) with modern brown cloth spines with gilt spine lettering. Volume one is foxed to a larger extent than volume two; several pages are torn at the lower extremities have been sewn with old linen (this set was obviously valued by an early owner). Not in Graff, Howes M-348; Robinson p. 144; Sabin 44941; Clark III, 205. Martineau (1802-76) is remembered as an essayist, educator and novelist. Her two books on her journey to the US are remarkable for her outspoken criticism of slavery and criticism of repressive chivalry. Robinson notes that Martineau's Society in America discusses the politics of her visit to America while this work discusses the mechanics of her travel, which took her the length of America: from Niagara to Texas, where she spent a good deal of time in the South. She mentions New Orleans, Charleston, SC, and Virginia before heading to Baltimore, Lexington (KY) and Cincinnati.
