There is moderate wear to the binding, which is rubbed, shows discoloration, and is bumped at the edges. Outer edges of the text block are toned. Ex-library copy with an index card taped to the back end paper but no other markings. There are several red ink marks on the title page. Otherwise, the text is clean and sound. Illustrated. The only copyright date is 1905, but this is clearly a more modern publication, likely from the 1940s to 1965 ("1965" is ink stamped on the front flyleaf).

Hardcover, red cloth boards show some spotting and scuffing along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The rear board has a light spot and some staining along the bottom. No hinge issues the front pastedown contains gift inscription (Junior from Santa Claus) no other handwriting found, no bookplates, no library markings etc. The dark blue end pages show fading along the edges and there are some faint stain marks on the rear end page in pastedown. Note: the copyright page shows the latest date of 1905 though it is possible this edition was printed at a later date, possibly the 1920s or 30s.

Illustrated end pages (with many of the characters from the tales within) and the drawings within the text have all been created by William Backhouse. Pale yellow coloured boards with red coloured illustration to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel; with red coloured titles to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, again by William Backhouse, with red, black, white and blue coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the backstrip. In the late 19th century Joel Chandler Harris collected the African-American folk tales from the southern states of America. He created Uncle Remus to tell the tales in the patois of the southern states, but, this patois has become a little difficult for modern readers to enjoy, the stories of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and the rest of the inhabitants of the stories, and, so Jane Shaw has rendered the stories… Leer más
