Navy and red labels with gilt titles, gilt tooling, and raised bands to spine. Boards gilt-ruled, gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Machine-marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Fine, as new. Originally published in 1846 with the title: "A narrative of a four months' residence among the natives of a valley of the Marquesas Islands, or, A peep at Polynesian life." Based on Melville's own experience living amongst the indigenous population of Nuku Hiva. Certain aspects of the book's validity have been contested, such as the fact ship logs show that the author spent only four weeks in the Marquesas rather than four months. This edition was published in the midst of the 1920s Melville revival which saw novels like Moby Dick reach cult status.
