One of 100 hand-numbered copies and SIGNED AND DATED BY HUGHES. a handsome near fine copy. This edition corrects an error of transposition in the original printing.

[8pp] stapled into card wrappers featuring a reproduction of a sixteenth-century woodcut taken from Foxe's 'Book of Martyrs', repeated on the first leaf. The wrappers lightly tanned and with a touch of light edge-creasing, and some surface abrasion to the verso of the first leaf where is appears a bookplate has been carefully removed. These are either new staples, or they were at some point repositioned. A nice, crisp copy of this uncommon item, somewhat more so that the uncorrected first issue (the poem was included in Hughes' debut collection 'The Hawk in the Rain'. Presentation copy from the author to his sister Olwyn Hughes, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Olwyn with love Ted 3rd March 70 For the rose, the thorn is watered". This was one of Hughes's favourite mottoes. The poem was originally printed in The Hawk in the Rain collection. Small quarto. Original printed wrappers. Without the red and blue wrappers. A little toned, a couple of marks on covers, else a very good copy. Sagar and Tabor, A21a1.

First separate edition, first printing, first issue, 1 of 100 copies, this additionally signed and dated and with a quatrain written out by Hughes; 4to; publisher's marbled paper wrappers, titles and device to both wrappers in black, rivet holes at backstrip as issued. A fine copy. This is the withdrawn first issue of this publication which was rejected by Hughes on account of the poorly printed wrappers and the transposition of two lines in the third stanza. As a result the 100 copies were never numbered or signed on the colophon and a second, corrected issue was produced. This example being signed and dated (1971) on the title page is unusual.
