A famous, beloved illustrated collection of German culture songs for children by Englebert Humperdinck, a German composer best known for having composed the opera Hansel and Gretel. This is an exact replica of the 1909 first edition, published circa 1970. Quarto, pictorial paper over boards, linen spine. Rubbed at corners, else good+. No dust jacket. Gift inscription dated 1971 on the half title. Each song is surrounded by lush illustrations by Paul Hey. Hey was known for his poetic, realistic graphics, mainly using painting techniques for fairy tales and folk songs, including Sang und Klang für Kinderherz. He was commissioned to illustrate a new edition of Anderson's Fairy tales in 1940, which also won acclaim.
