The archeologist and historian James Henry Breasted was the first American to obtain a doctorate in Egyptology. Breasted led expeditions to Egypt and the Sudan and copied inscriptions from monuments that had been previously unreachable or were perishing. He was also responsible for organizing the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago in 1919.

The papyrus is named after Edwin Smith, who purchased the document in January 1862 during his stay at Thebes. The papyrus is the oldest known surgical treatise and consists entirely of case reports focusing on trauma and surgery. James Henry Breasted provided the first translation of the papyrus.
