Descripción:
London: Edward Lumley, 1832. vii, [1], 79pp, [1]. With an engraved frontispiece (misbound after the title) and a further 27 engraved plates (several displaced). Later calf-backed marbled paper boards, contrasting red calf lettering-piece. A trifle rubbed and marked. Scattered spotting. William St. Clair's copy, with his pencilled ownership inscription and a note in his hand to recto of FFEP: 'The translation by PBS of the May Day Night Scene is presumably reprinted from the version in The Liberal. The Note is also taken (with some omissions) from The Liberal. Does the attribution 'L H' [Leigh Hunt] imply that Hunt was concerned with the book as a whole? Lumley published The Beauties of Percy Bysshe Shelley (pirated but claiming authority from Leigh Hunt) in 1831.' An anonymous translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's (1749-1832) magnum opus, appended by Percy Bysshe Shelley's (1792-1822) translation of the May-day Night scene. Shelley's obsession with Faust spanned…

Descripción:
London: Booksey & Sons, 1821. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Thin 8vo. Rebound in modern 3/4 maroon leather and red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. pp. viii, 86, [2], with the half-title, and the final leaf with a list of plates and errata; frontispiece drawn and engraved by Henry Moses, and with 26 plates engraved by Moses after Professor Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch's 'outlines'. Some scattered staining and spotting, as often the case. Some pages here are very fresh, others not so fresh; but, in all, a very good copy. The First Edition of the First Complete English Translation of Part One of Goethe's Faust. There were several editions of this book, this being the edition with the accompanying plates. The translation was anonymous at the time of printing; it was first incorrectly credited to George Soane. It has since been revealed that Samuel Taylor Coleridge was the actual translator.

Descripción:
Boosey and Rodwell & Martin, London., 1821. First edition. pp.viii, 86, 1 List of Plates. 28 plates, engraved by [Henry] Moses, from the original copper etchings which [Moritz] Ret[z]sch made for the German edition. Quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. Coleridge insisted that he "had never put pen to paper as a translator of Faust" which does not quite accord with what Goethe wrote in a letter to his son, in 1820, saying that Coleridge was already well under way with the translation. There are various theories as to why Coleridge did not wish his name put to the translation the most plausible of which, according to Frederick Burwick and James C. McKusick, editors of the 2007 Oxford University Press edition of Faustus, was that when he first undertook to do the translation, in 1814, he did not wish to be associated with Goethe's unorthodox religious views, which is ironic given that he seemed to be making Faustian pacts of his own, not least in his increasing use of…
