Philadelphia: Abraham Small. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1824. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Bound in the original full leather. The leather has some surface soiling. Primary flaw is substantial foxing, mainly towards the outside pages. Otherwise very tight & clean. Without the foxing, I would have graded the book fine to fine+. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 486 pages .

Written by the fourth and arguably most important Supreme Court chief justice. Originally published as Marshall's Introduction to his Life of George Washington, now issued in its first separate (and corrected) edition. In his Preface Marshall explains the reason for publishing his history of the colonies in a separate volume, in "a form less exceptionable than that which it originally bore" (p. vii): "From the extreme, I may add unpardonable, precipitation with which it was hurried to the press, many errors were overlooked which, on a perusal of the book, were as apparent to the author as to others. He was desirous of correcting these errors, and of making the work more worthy of the public to which it was offered, as well as more satisfactory to himself. Marbled end papers. Faded marbled text edges. Leather is scuffed on the covers and lightly worn on the spine. Hinges are in good condition. Moderate toning and foxing throughout. Old ink name of "E Young" written top of the right front flyleaf. Pencil inscription written below reads - "Elisha Young M.D. Greensboro Hale Co Ala 1880." Other pencil names and a few short words written on the rear end sheets (names include Thos Yeardly? and P J Ingram). A fair to good copy.
