Charles Davis, 1735. ~Original/early blank at each end in additon to pagination cited. Freshly rebound in tan calf, raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Binding mint, contents Very Good. No ownership marks. This copy has 'Finis' at foot of p.432, but then includes pp.433-80, with the last contents page including the extra material. Pp. *197-*200 interrupt the text with 'Upon the Horrid Plot discover'd by Harlequin' (a poem). This arrangement apparently differs from all the copies listed in Copac, in which the text is said to be continuous, and the starred pagination is said to replace pp.197-200. The first printed page, facing the title-page, is an Advertisement, according to which this volume contains all the Pieces ascribed to Swift in the Dublin edition of his Works, except those which had already been published in the four volumes of Miscellanies printed for Motte and Gilliver, the Drapier's Letters and Gulliver's Travels. London: T. Woodward & Charles Davis, 1736. ~Original half calf, marbled paper to boards. Spine darkened and with hairline cracks over bands, just starting over front hinge, but holding. Mild wear to board edges. Board corners slightly pushed in. All edges speckled blue, faded. Two ink spots to fore-edges. Small 8vo (10 x 15.8cm). Hinges very slightly tender, but sound. Mild foxing and age-browning. Miscellanies in Prose and Verse was a joint enterprise between Swift and Pope, with contributions by other leading satirists including John Gay and John Arbuthnot. As Swift and Pope explained in the preface to the first vol. of the series, this was an attempt to supplant earlier unauthorised similar editions: 'Having both of us been extreamly ill treated by some Booksellers, (...) it was our Opinion that the best Method we could take for justifying ourselves, would be to publish whatever loose Papers in Prose and Verse, we have formerly written'. London: Printed for Benjamin Motte, 1727-1728. Three volumes. First edition thus, with a preface by Swift and Pope. Contemporary full brown calf, spines lettered in gilt, red labels to spines, and red speckled edges. Good set, with heavy flaking to calf, spine ends lightly chipped, some wear to corners, some rubbing to edges, a bit of loss to spine label on Vol. I (lettering very minimally affected), dampstaining to pp. 32-144 and 222-305 in Vol. I and margins of Vol. II's title page and table of contents page, and just some light spotting and soiling to interiors otherwise. Overall, a sturdy and unrestored set, in a contemporary binding. Miscellanies is a collaborative work by satirists Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, mathematician John Arbuthnot, and poet John Gay, the most prominent members of the Scriblerus Club. [xiv], 414 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Handsome contemporary full mottled calf, spine intricately stamped in gilt, in six compartments, with raised bands. Owner's small, attractive, gilt stamped, octagonalk laether armorial bookplate of J. McCullough Turner on front pastedown. Leather is moderately rubbed on spine, with light wear at crown of spine and tips of corners, else a very good copy, with the text fresh and clean, binding tight.
