A collection of various indictments, warrants, and other forms issued by judges and officers of the peace, gathered by subject. Published in Richmond a year before the series of secessions which sparked the American Civil War, of particular interest is the section on laws specifically for people of color, either slave or free. Compiled and edited by Joseph Mayo, lawyer and mayor of Richmond, who would surrender the city to the Union Army. Some toning to the edges of the pages. A nice copy in calf, with a Black morocco label. Very Good binding.

Octavo, 702 pages; G; Fully bound in leather with red label and gilt lettering to spine; Boards have light shelfwear overall, moderate cracking to spine, light+ damp-staining, and a few small chips; Textblock shows moderate age toning to edges (light interiorly), occasional light to light+ foxing and offsetting, moderate age toning and light+ damp-staining to paste downs, end pages, and title page, complete partial tear of fep (also missing a fep or half-title page, torn out), and inscription penciled to fep in 19th century hand.
