Collated, complete.In the very smart original cloth binding, which has a repeated ethereal gilt motif across the spine and front board.Housman, a prominent Victorian era playwright, writer, and illustrator, also designed the binding for this work; he worked for the publisher, designing many of their book covers. He is remembered as admitting in that binding that he 'did what I thought an extra-good one for myself. Folkard and Son, London, on wove paper, untrimmed. Bound in green cloth decoratively stamped in gilt, spine gilt, title page and frontispiece beautifully decorated, large chapter initials, illustrated with five full page illustrations, light scattered foxing to first handfull of leaves incluing title and frontispiece and along fore-edges. Bound in the opriginal green cloth with art nouveau gilt design by Housman stamped to the front board and spine. Yellow endpapers with floral decorations. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped and rubbed, the spine gilt a little dull, but otherwise an excellent copy, clean throughout and the binding tight. A really beautiful 1890's cloth binding.

A delightful illustrated book, in the original publisher's cloth binding, the design for which the artist himself thought 'an extra good one...: it was at all events, very rich and elaborate.' That same year the designer's more austere brother, the poet A.E. Housman, also privately published his most famous work, A Shropshire Lad.Designed by the art historian and writer Haldane Macfall, the bookplate is that of Annesley T[yndale] Warre, a prolific book collector and well-known collector of Chinese ceramics and hardstones.
