Michael Joseph confesses that he acquired Charles O'Malley as an unworthy gesture of indepdence towards his tortoiseshell tabby Minna Minna Mowbray, up to then the haughty and indisuputed head of his household. The gesture was a failure but it had an unexpected results, for Charles was to prove the best loved of all the author's cats.
