Maclise, Gilbert, Harvy, and Cruikshank. Anna Maria Hall (6 January 1800 – 30 January 1881) was an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall". She was born in Dublin but left for England at age 15. The author writes "In these 'Sketches' I have aimed at a higher object than mere amusement, - desiring so to picture the Irish character, as to make it more justly appreciated, more rightly estimated, and more respected in England. . . . Illustrated with frontis, five full-page engravings, and sixty additional engravings by several artists. Contemporary rich red full calf with elaborate frame in gilt to front. Gilt title and five raised bands to spine. Gilt edges and dentelles. Rubbing to edges. Faded ink mark to front board. Bookseller's sticker to front pastedown. Spine and hinges tight. Regal looking book with a well-preserved interior. Anna Maria Hall (1800 - 1881) was an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall". She was born Anna Maria Fielding in Dublin, but left Ireland for England at the age of 15. Mrs Hall's first recorded contribution to literature is an Irish sketch called "Master Ben", which appeared in The Spirit and Manners of the Age, January 1829. Other tales followed. Some scuffing, signs of use and rubbing to corners. Banded spine, gilt title and gilt embellishments to panels. All edge marbled but faded. Attractive marbled endpapers, cracked to hinge but reasonably sound. Neat armorial bookplate. Plain preliminary page. Front end paper is missing. Frontispiece is a lovely wood engraving of Lilly O'Brien - some light damp staining at extreme edges but otherwise very good. Title page is embellished with engravings from daily life which is used to emphasise the title, after a dedication to 'Thomas Boyse, Esq, of the Grange Bannow'. Contents and List of Illustrations, 380 pages after which in a smaller print the book ends with 'Ireland its Scenery, Characters etc etc, 381-384'.
