The writer of the journal, David Johnstone, and John Hoare had been attempting to cross the Atlantic in the fifteen foot rowing boat when they were caught, it is thought, in Hurricane Faith, and were lost at sea. 252pp. Not Inscribed or Signed. This is the First Edition. Blue Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾". Hard Back.

Hutchinson, 1968. 1st ed G++ as ex library but very few stamps or marks in VG dw. the mystery of the disappearance in 1966 of The Puffin, a 15ft boat, that was being rowed across the Atlantic. The upturned hull was finally found in mid-Atlantic with their diary, on which the book has been based.

The mystery of the disappearance of the tiny, fifteen foot 'Puffin', crewed by David Johnstone and John Hoare in their attempt to row the Atlantic, captured the world headlines in Oct. 1966, and there has since been much speculation about the reasons for the tragedy. When Puffin was found in mid-Atlantic, frogmen discovered in the upturned hull a 35000 word journal in Johnstone's handwriting which gives a day-by-day account of vicissitudes which he and Hoare suffered. The Penance Way is based on this material. A generous list of illustrations provided - a section of photographs on semi-gloss stock and nineteen figures. Map endpapers.
