A scarce set of prime importance in the study of Wise and his forgeries. Inner hinge of first volume cracked but solid. Better condition than most sets seen.

Library stamps to endpapers and margin of v.1 Preface (withdrawn), but no other institutional markings; thin splits to hinges (internal); spines sunned, as usual; still a tight, attractive set, solidly VG. A. Edward Newton suggests that this title should be interpreted as "part of Wise's 'build-up' of [Wise's] forgeries, and goes on to recommend that it be read side-by-side with Pollard & Redgrave's "Enquiry" and Partington's Forging Ahead. Contains a wealth of anecdotal matter on 19th century literary figures and includes interesting, if not altogether trustworthy, bibliographies of Robert Browning and Swinburne; it also includes the first publication of Wise's forgeries of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George Eliot, Swinburne, and others.
