Very good. 2 Vols.. 272 , 248 pages. 20 x 12.5 cm. The illustrations, "the greater portion of which are of my own invention," with his headpiece designs for each one and with initial letters and tailpieces by William Harvey, pupil of Thomas Bewick." James Northcote was one of a number of prominent painters of the 18th century. Today Northcote is chiefly admired for his portraits, though his paintings of animals found favor in his lifetime. In his later years he devoted an increasing amount of time to history paintings, including some scenes from Shakespeare s history plays which were exhibited in Boydell s Shakespeare Gallery. Embellished with two hundred and eighty engravings on wood. With distinguished provenance, with the bookplates of Michael Tomkinson, (1841 - 1921), Royal Axminster carpet manufacturer and noted collector of Japanese art, medieval manuscripts, and early printed books, bearing a large and ornate coat of arms designed by J. James Northcote (1746-1831) was a prolific English painter and draftsman whose career was much advanced through his apprenticeship with Joshua Reynolds, for whom he worked for about 5 years, beginning in 1771. Full green morocco contemporary binding with gilt lettering to spine and ornate gilt tooling with blind panels, inner edges dentelle. A.E.G. some rubbing to extremities, hinges cracking, some light foxing and staining, yellow staining to flyleaves, small tear to margin of p. xxxvii. Illustrated with 280 woodcuts, with a 60-page memoir of the author (the book was published posthumously). "These Fables, and the designs for them were the collection and study of many years of the author's life, who must be his own apologist for what might be by some considered a superfluous addition to our fabulous literature."--From the introduction.
