Missing the large foling map of Central Park tipped in at rear. Clean within.

Rare in a dust jacket that has survived in any condition, this volume was the first in the later publication, "Forty Years of Landscape Architecture." xv, 131 pp. 8vo. Dark brown dust jacket with light scuffing overall, small 1/2" closed tear at upper left corner of front panel, now in mylar cover. Green cloth covered boards with gold embossed titling to spine, cloth and embossing as sharp as the day it was printed. Interior very clean with previous owner's name in ink on half-title page.

Vol. II only (complete unto itself) of this epic 2 vol. examination of the life and work of almost certainly America's greatest landscape architect of the 19th century, Frerderick Law Olmsted. A solid, very presentable copy of the 1928 1st edition, Vol. II focusing largely on Olmsted's seminal role in the design of Central Park. Clean and Near Fine in a crisp, VG to VG+ dustjacket, with a bit of light rubbing and light soiling to the panels, and very mild wear at the tips and the spine crown. Thick octavo, almost 30 illustrations supplementing the text, large fold-out map at the rear pastedown. Edited by Olmsted's son (Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.) and Theodora Kimball.

Frederick Law Olmsted, Senior, was one of America's foremost artists and a founder of the profession of landscape architecture in the U.S. This, the first volume of his papers, was published on the centennial of his birth and contains a delightful collection of autobiographical passages relating to his boyhood and travels in rural England and the Southern States. From this account we get an unusually vivid picture of New England village life in the first half of the nineteenth century. Included in the volume is a short paper on American Landscape Gardening in 1857.
