Facsimile Edition; 4to; pp. 174; portrait frontispiece with tissue guard; half leather binding; raised bands; marbled endpapers; gilt decoration to spine; light foxing to page edges and early and late pages; light fading to spine; otherwise a very good copy. Introduction by Edmund Gosse. Includes facsimile of original title page. Originally written circa 1693. Loosely inserted a short letter to Sir John Latham, and a loose amorial bookplate of Alexander Macully.

J. Sowle, 1718. The book measures 5¼ x 3", it has [16] + 158 + [6] + 111 +[3] pages and is complete. It is bound in later full calf, there is some light rubbing but the binding remains attractive and is sound. The later endpapers are browning in the margins. The ti tle page has some light foxing. The text has some light foxing / browning in places but is otherwise clean and crisp, the final leaf [the index] has a small hole.

Newport, RI: Printed by James Franklin, at the Town-School-House, 1749. Eighth edition. 12mo. [12], 158, [8] pp.; [6], 104, 107-108, [2] pp. Part One is complete save for a missing blank leaf at the end; but the second part lacks two text pages, pp. 105-106, and the last two leaves are only partially there. Only the top half of text pp. 107-8 and the index leaf are present. In a worn contemporary brown calf binding with rounded corners, scratches and nicks to all surfaces, whose hinges have been strengthened. The title-page and the partial leaves at the end of the volume (pp. 107-108 and the index leaf) have been mounted on archival paper and tipped in. Most pages have a few nicks and tiny chips to edges, not effecting text, and there is dampstaining to a good portion of some pages. 2 volumes in one, 12mo, contemporary calf, 1, [[14], 158, [6], 1, [6], 117 pp. Calf with moderate wear, and somewhat weak hinges, lacks front endpapers, moderate dampstaining in the second book, index leaf misbound, first page after volume one repaired with some loss of text, final leaf defective with loss of text at the top of the page, early owner's inscription on rear face papers; still a very decent copy. William Penn (1644-1718) was born in London, and in 1681 would make history by founding the colony of Pennsylvania. He started this enterprise with good intentions and considerable resources, and even managed to cultivate good relations with Native Americana in the area. However, by 1685 the colony became a financial failure for Penn, and his vision for an "ideal society" ended. Penn, a Quaker, had his share of squabbles with other religious leaders, but he was fortunate enough to have the means to publish his opinions. Leather binding in very good condition except for a 1/4" cut to the top of the spine; Plane binding in keeping with early Friends publications, though new end papers appear to be more recent; Repaired with new end papers, original rear paste-down retained; Pages show modest age toning; a couple pages with light stain to lower corner; One leaf has a 3/4" tear which runs into text between lines; A couple pages, 110/111 with a couple stains in the text; Last 14 pages have small stain at the fore-edge.. Bronner & Fraser 96B; "copyright" page facing title page reading 'Licensed, May 24, 1693' is pasted to the end paper, not part of gathering A and is not referenced in Bronner & Fraser's collation; [12] 136 pages; 467 entries, one more than in the first edition.

Bound in a beautiful hand-crafted binding, rebacked with a calf spine. Front board with image of an angel, on-laid over gold cloth and surrounded by a gold border. Patterned endpapers. Some minor rubbing and chipping to boards. Leaf A1, [License page] is remargined on all sides, not affecting text, and with previous owner's old ink signature and an article clipping on blank recto.
