The first book by this American poet and actor, a series of interconnected stories as told by the Indian on a penny left, as a Christmas gift, by a warm-hearted shop-girl on the windowsill of a little lame boy. Illustrated throughout with charming drawings - including some full page plates, headpieces and tailpieces and en texte drawings - by the artist Clinton Peters (1865-1948). In reviewing the English edition, The Spectator commented "This, of course, reminds one of the immortal Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen's spirit has, indeed, been happily caught by the writer, and the writer has been very successfully seconded by the artist.
