Book is in very good minus condition with minor but noticeable signs of wear and/or age. . Hardback. VG-/No DW.

New York: Charles B. Richardson, 1865.. 1865.. Good. - Octavo, brown cloth titled in gilt on the spine with frames & decorations in blind on both covers. The binding is rubbed & bumped with the rear cover, the edges of both covers & the tail of the spine chipped. The head of the spine is torn with pieces out of the top of both joints. 391 pages plus 3-page publisher's catalog. Illustrated with 5 engraved portrait plates with tissue guards, including a frontispiece. The pastedowns are a bit bubbled with some rippling to the endpapers & there is an owner's ink name on the front endpaper. There is a piece out of the flyleaf. There is scattered foxing & staining, especially to the tissue guards with some offsetting to the plates & the facing pages. Pages 327- 330 are detached but present. Good.

Part of the table of contents is missing (it appears the book was bound without them, not that they were removed) but title and half-title are present and in their correct positions. Large portions of the paper spine missing, but title is complete. Scattered light internal foxing. New Howes P- 446. First volume of "The first popular history of the war from the Confederate point of view. Modest chipping at ends of backstrips. Small pieces of cover cloth reglued at center of backstrip on first and third year volumes. Some hinges reglued. Some offsetting and foxing, most noticeably on tisuue guards and their adjoining portraits and text pages. At head of title on each volume: Southern History of the War. Pollard, a white pro-slavery Confederate sympathizer, was an editor of the Richmond Examiner during the Civil War.
