1893 Memorial Edition 2 vols complete, original cloth h/b Complete and intact condition, illustrated with fold-out maps, plans & plates ( mainly sepia but a few coloured) and some in-line b&w. Top closed-edges tinted red, inscription-free but for minimal ex-library markings (incl "WITHDRAWN" stamps), a paper-clip or footprint on a prelim of each vol, gilt spine-titles and front-&-rear cover decorative figures, on black cloth that is rubbed through on corners. Unusually good ex-library condition for this age, no loosened pages, sl worn, a little light foxing or handling throughout, a gluing crack or two (but quite sound) and sl rubbing wear to covers. The 1893 Memorial Edition of " the Works" comprised 3 separate titles, this being one complete title Burton's Pilgrimage to AL-MEDINAH & MECCA

With a total 19 plates in color or monochrome, a folding color map and folding ground plan, plus 28 text woodcuts. Photographic frontispiece of Isabel Burton in Vol. I, and color frontispiece of Burton in Arab disguise in Vol. II. Frontispieces with foxed tissue guards. Touch of foxing on exterior leaves. Illustrated bookplates of Johannis Naish on inside covers, dated 1923. A manuscript letter addressed to John, dated 7. IX 07, laid in, indicating the volumes were donated to a missionary to help him with his proselytizing. Volume I with light soiling, tiny chips at foot of spine and a touch of dampstaining, rippling on the front cover, but still a nice set. Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) was an English explorer and Arab linguist, disguised himself as a Dervish in order to gain entrance to Mecca and Medina in 1851-1853.

The two volume Memorial Edition, edited by Burton's wife Isabel, handsomely rebound in mid-20th century fine binding of half black morocco over dark green crushed morocco boards, gilt lettering and decorations back, tops dyed red. Near Fine, top edges a bit rubbed, initials E.P.L. bottom edges of page blocks, small stamp Edinburgh Libraries at verso of plates, small period bookplates at final page of text both volumes. All maps and plates present, Some edge wear and creasing at edges of fold-out map. Overall a quite lovely set that would grace any library. . Memorial Edition. Morocco. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Minor darkening to the spine and rubbing to the edges, otherwise bright. Owners name in ink and portrait of Burton pasted to the front endpapers of the first volume, with book plates to both volumes. Minor occasional spotting and pencil marks. Illustrated throughout with folding maps and colour chromolithographs plates. A handsome pair. . Near Fine. Cloth. Second Edition. 1893.
