Descripción:
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1933. Come buy, come buy Signed limited edition, number 46 of 410 copies signed by the illustrator. Rossetti's Goblin Market, first published in 1862, is a fantastical narrative poem, interpreted variously as a feminist tract, a capitalist critique, an allegory for drug addiction, and a children's story; Rackham's delightfully eerie illustrations are notably well-suited to the text's looming sense of danger. Rackham's nephew, the writer Walter Starkie, "confessed to thinking Rackham was a goblin 'in his shabby blue suit and carpet slippers, hopping about the studio with a palette on one arm, waving a paintbrush in his hand'" (ODNB). Octavo. Original limp vellum, front cover lettered in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour frontispiece and three colour plates, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Extremities a little bumped, some minor soiling to covers, occasional foxing: a very good copy. Latimore & Haskell,… Leer más

Descripción:
London. Fine/Near Fine. Limited to 410 copies signed by the illustrator, of which this is 331. Fine book bound in original vellum with gilt to spine and front board. Pictorial endpapers. Housed in a Near Fine slipcase with original paper label to top panel and retaining the original glassine jacket in exceptionally nice condition with trivial nicking to top edges. Among Christina Rossetti's most influential works, here combined with the dark and seductive illustrations of Rackham. "Set in a fairy world and exploring themes of temptation, sacrifice, and salvation, Goblin Market tells the story of a fraught encounter between two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, and evil goblin merchants. While Laura exchanges a lock of her golden hair for the chance to taste the goblins' enchanted 'fruit forbidden'...and the goblins violently attack Lizzie, smearing their fruits 'against her mouth' in an attempt to force her to eat" (BL). Ultimately, it is the sisters' reliance and trust on each other that restores them to… Leer más

Descripción:
1933. Original artwork for Rossetti's poem Published within Rackham's edition of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market in 1933. This fine watercolour appears opposite page 44 and is one of the four colour plates. Rackham's work for Harrap in the 1930s saw a return to the artist's early style. Fred Gettings in an essay on "Rackham's Best Book Illustrations" states that Goblin Market "might easily have become an exercise in grotesqueries" but that Rackham's work "has been infused with a delicacy of feeling and humour which touches the poem's own qualities very well, but here we have all the elements of early Rackham..." Original drawing (250 x 160 mm) on artist's board (259 x 177 mm with "Smith's Specially Prepared Boards" printed on reverse), fine ink and watercolour, signed ("Arthur Rackham") lower left, mounted, framed, and glazed (framed size 404 x 317 mm). Fine and unfaded. Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, 1976, p. 162.
