Strand Publications, 1111. Hardcover. Acceptable. No Edition Remarks. Unpaginated. No dust jacket. Pictorial paper covered boards. Black and white illustrations and pop-up colour dioramas. Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Heavy cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding loose. Previous owner's name to front pastedown. Some dioramas have pieces missing and tape repairs. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and rubbing to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces very heavily tanned, particularly spine which is heavily worn. Some additional marks and staining to surfaces. Book has strong backwards lean.

London : Strand Publications A fair copy of Bookano No 4 with 5 pop up models. The pictorial binding is very scuffed and worn and has lost much of the picture on the spine and a large chunk of picture from the back board. Contents generally clean apart from one black and white illustration which has been part coloured in and has lost some surface. The pop ups all work: the first pop up has a bent tree which does not pop up properly, but the rest look good. Text pages generally brown toned.

Internally very good & clean - all Pop-ups are near fine with excellent movement : The Animal Choir, The Fairy Glen, Westminster Abbey, Old King Coel & The Pig Family Feast. The endpapers not cracked. The covers complete but rubbing along both sides of the spine & showing through but tight.Corners are generally good+ with text block darkened due to age only. Thick card pages (36) printed on both sides, collated complete with all 6 pop-ups in good working order, a few parts neatly repaired without any loss. Two full-page text illustrations and 8 of the head or tail-pieces lightly coloured in crayon by a previous owner (Montanaro pp 34-5).

Remains of gift sticker to title page and frontis. Spine lightly creased vertically otherwise a clean and sound copy with the pop-ups in very good order.

The cover design is 'The Golden Fleece is Borne Away'. The paper is rubbed and scraped along the edges and at the top and bottom of the spine, a light but 'wiggly' crease line runs down the spine, and the tips of each corner are rubbed through to the board, but the covers are tight and sound and generally pretty good. (see Images). NO Inscriptions or Marks. No date shown in the book, but research gives the date as c. 1945. The 5 lovely full colour Pop-Ups are undamaged apart from tears to a couple of 'tags'. With a full page coloured Frontispiece and colour Title page. The coloured endpapers show 'Atlanda's Race' and 'Stanley Meeting Livingstone'. The Bookano Stories began publication towards the end of the 1920s, and were the first 'automatic' books. Sixteen annuals were produced between 1929 and 1949, with the title stemming from merging the words 'book' and 'Meccano'. Created by S. Louis Giraud.This edition contains five complete and functioning pop-ups, as well as one lacking. Collated.Illustrated in full colour, with classic stories such as 'Swan Lake' and 'As You Like It'.A charming and early example of a pop-up work. In the publisher's original paper covered boards. Externally generally smart, with some bumping to extremities and rubbing to the spine resulting in loss to the paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. One pop up is sadly lacking. Good
