Schele De Vere, LLD Decorated American binding - Clean red leather boards with gold and black lettering and grapevines and man playing a harp with a woman leaning over the harp on cover, gold lettering, grapevines and squirrel on spine. Smooth, dark blue endpapers - no bookplates. Appears to have the original spine re-bound. Some wear to corners and spine ends. Binding is tight and square, pages are mostly clean, some pages have a water drop mark/stain on the edge, with gilt page edges all around. Spine is rebound, some splitting on the front lower left of cover. Size: 9 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches The Date on the Title page is 1875; the copyright date is 1874. Large 8vo, in the publisher's original Riverside pebbled orange cloth, the upper cover and spine lettered and extensively illustrated with designs by Doré in black and vivid gilt, the rear cover embossed in blind, a.e.g. xii, 423 pp. A handsome copy with overall age mellowing to the cloth. Normal mellowing to the pages due to the paper stock used by the publisher, front inner hinge just starting. An honest copy of a scarce book. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARELY SEEN ILLUSTRATED WORK BY GUSTAVE DORÉ. Saintine's sixteen chapters of myths written in the style of the Romantics gave Doré a broad canvas on which to work.
