This copy was rebound at some point in brown cloth boards with one third leather spine and tips. 112 pp. Leather is quite rubbed, corners are bumped and frayed, small piece missing from top of spine. The front hinge is cracked, old name and date at top of title page. Good only. Scarce,

Philadelphia: Benjamin Warner, 1821. 1st American edition. Leather. Fair. 1st American edition. A Fair copy. 8vo., viii, (ii), 128 pp., illustrated with 4 hand-colored engraved folding plates. Bound in period full leather, with marbled end papers. The spine strip is missing, with both boards barely holding on, Text pages heavily browned and dry. Binding a bit shaken. This may be a candidate for binding repairs. 1st American edition, printed from the 2nd London edition.

Philadelphia: Benjamin Warner, 1821. Full Leather. Fair binding. Octavo. x, 128 pp., 4 plates. First American Edition from the Second London. Bound in contemporary calf. Spine is desiccated and the leather at the joints is separated but the cords are tentatively holding; spine label is gone. Previous owner name on the preliminary blanks; textblock is toned throughout. The four folding, hand-colored plates are present with only minor closed tears at the intersection of the folds. "Saunders was the first to describe paracentesis in acute middle-ear suppuration" Garrison & Morton 3362.

John Cunningham Suanders (1773-1810) "Was the first to advise paracentesis in acute middle-ear suppuration" "Den sinnfälligsten Ausdruck erhielt der rege Eifer für die Erweiterung des Faches in der Gründung von Ambulatorien oder Heilanstalten für Ohrenkranke. Hierzu ging von England die erste Anregung aus, wo John Cunningham Saunders (1773-1810) 1804 den ersten Plan für eine derartige, wissenschaftlichen und praktischen Zwecken dienende Anstalt entwarf. Dank dem Wohltätigkeitsinn des englischen Volkes konnte bereits im März 1805 das durch private Beiträge gestiftete Institut unter dem Namen "London dispensary for curing diseases of the Eye and Ear" eröffnet werden. Leider waren die Erfolge aus äußerlichen Gründen nicht entsprechend, so daß späterhin die Anstalt bloß auf die Aufnahme von Augenkranken beschränkt wurde."… Leer más

First Edition! John Cunningham Saunders (1773-1810) - "Born in Devonshire. Saunders began his surgical training when he was seventeen years old. In 1795, he moved to London to study under Astley Cooper at St. Thomas Hospital, where he was appointed as a demonstrator in anatomy. In 1805 he opened The London Dispensary for Curing Diseases of the Eye and the Ear. Very quickly, he limited his activity to ophthalmology and became famous for his cataract operations. He died very young of a brain disease. In 1806, he published The Anatomy of the Human Ear, dedicated to Astley Cooper. "It is a brief, but scientific treatise, and far beyond its predecessors. It is characterized by simplicity, and is without the absurdities of the older text-books" (D.B. Rosa). It contains several ideas on the expansion… Leer más
