Brown cloth covers are scuffed and a little rubbed, and there are some tears along the joints. There is also a horizontal tear near center of spine, and some looseness of cloth. Top hinge (internal) is cracked and there is a little separation between the first and second title page. Contents are otherwise clean and intact.

Catalogue of the Fulicariae (Rallidae and Heliornithidae) and Alectorides (Aramidae, Eurypygidae, Mesitidae, Rhinochetidae, Gruidae, Psophiidae, and Otididae) in the Collection of the British Museum. Nine chromolithographic plates by J.G. KEULEMANS. The complete work published in 27 volumes (1874-1898) provided a detailed description of every bird with synonomy and distribution. He found temporary shelter at the home of the young R. B. Sharpe. "Als sich 1870 die deutschen Truppen der französischen Hauptstadt nähern, flieht er (Verreaux) nach London und findet Obdach bei dem jungen Bowdler Sharpe, der ihm nachgerühmt hat: "He possessed an immense knowledge of birds, probably greater than any man of his generation.""
