Fair/No Jacket. the boards are worn and marked and the spine ends are frayed especially the bottom which is very frayed. the book has a previous owner's crossed through name and 2 seperate ownership stamp marks. the book is also foxed and there are age related marks. that said, the binding is excellent and the book is complete with all plates as called for which are in excellent condition.. Adam and Charles Black, London, 1903. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 274 pages (complete). A passive copy. The boards are much worn, marked, scuffed, stained all about. They do, however, retain a dignity that is pleasing. The spine has wear, marks. The boards and spine are steady and sure. Inside, the contents are pleasing. Whilst there is evidence of use, ownership and age throughout, the pages are contented. The pages fore and aft have flecks of foxing, some handling marks. The pages in general, and by far, are clean, clear, genteel, convivial, very occasionally flushed with shallow foxing, generous, engaging. fk. Hardcover.  Decorated boards lightly soiled, rubbed and shelfworn, with wear along edges, both spine ends and edges, and edge points gently bumped and worn. Top edges gilt. Internally, end pages age toned but free of previous owners marks or signatures, just an old bookseller ticket to bottom edge of 1st free end-page. There is light foxing scattered throughout.  The binding is tight albeit slighlty cocked, with hinges intact.

Red and orange/dark yellow borders to spine and front cover. 66 colour plates. B/w illustrations. A and C Black 20 Shillings Series. Bumping and wear to spine and corners; some browning to spine. A few marks to covers. Foxing and browning to endpapers and outer page edges; a few to margins. All plates present.

Beveled edges. Top page edges gilt. In very good condition. Cover with some darkening and handling marks, nicks to cloth at bottom ends of spine, leading corners bumped, cloth chipped on front corners. Endpapers foxed and darkened. Later “Henry Southeran” bookseller label to front. Crease to front endpaper. Signed and numbered by Author. Some areas of moderate foxing to tissue guards and some adjacent pages. Plates all clean and bright. Else a clean and tight copy. 274pp. With 66 full-page plates, mostly in colour, some B&W toned. With many B&W vignette illustrations in text.

Large 8vo, in the publisher's original navy blue cloth, the upper cover and spine gilt lettered and decorated in red and orange, t.e.g. xiii, 274 pp. A very good and handsome copy, the plates are all very fine, the text with only a little mellowing, the binding is strong and sturdy and attractive with a little edge wear and minor bumping and a few spots on the blue cloth. A FASCINATING ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE BOER WARS. The author, Captain Stratford Edward St Leger, commanded the Cork Company MI of the Royal Irish Regiment. Although his family was of French/Irish origin he was born in the Cape Colony in 1867 the son of the Anglican Rector of Queenstown.
