Bound in full red cloth with gilt lettering and device stamped on spine. Faded dampstain to tail of spine and immediate area of front and rear cover. A clipping of a Sullivan article from the New York Herald Tribune, 1941, is tipped in to the front free endpaper. Offsetting from clipping to front pastedown. The price-clipped dust jacket shows dampstaining along spine, which is faded, and closed three-inch tear on front panel. (Please see photos.). In the article Sullivan reminiscences about life prior to rural electrification. Scarce first edition. Despite condition factors, this copy remains well bound and presentable. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archival sleeve.

Tight, clean early (not first) printing of the journalist and historian's memoir -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Sullivan, 1p, 8½" X 5 3/4", Washington, DC, 25 April 1941. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. "It was thoughtful of you to send me your booklet, 'Amberglow', and I appreciate the inscription. I am taking the book with me this week-end when I visit my farm. Maybe it will give me some inspiration...." Boldly signed in black ink. Budding historian Gates had published "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge" in 1939 and greatly admired Sullivan's 6-volume opus, "Our Times: The United States, 1900-1925.

Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers.
