Still, embedded as he was with the German forces in Belgium, the book provides a fascinating alternative portrait of the Great War. The boards are worn, scuffed and marked all about. The spine has been repaired. The binding is secure. The contents have evidence of avid use throughout. The pages have rashes of foxing. They are otherwise clean, clear, certain and determined. fk. The corners are rubbed and the spine ends scuffed and tatty. There is splitting to both spine edges from the top and from the bottom. Both joints are tender and the binding is loose but holding. Prev owner's signature to front pastedown and a rubber stamps to ffep. A couple of the prelim pages are starting to detach from the bottom. Isolated instances of brown staining to the text. 402pp + catalogue. Pages rough-cut. All four maps present and undamaged. Numerous b/w plates. Fair to good.

Criticised in the English press, the publisher has written an explanatory note of his reason for publishing in which he states that the veracity of the facts are indisputable whilst the authors 'anti-English' opinions, whilst irritating to the British subject, will not affect the British cause. Sven Anders Hedin (19 February 1865 - 26 November 1952) was a Swedish geographer, topographer, explorer, photographer, travel writer and illustrator of his own works. During four expeditions to Central Asia, he made the Transhimalaya known in the West and located sources of the Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej Rivers. He also mapped lake Lop Nur, and the remains of cities, grave sites and the Great Wall of China in the deserts of the Tarim Basin. With 16pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The author, better known as the Swedish explorer of Central Asia, spent two months with the German forces in France and Belgium early in WWI. His account, although criticised strongly for its apparent partiality, is nontheless valuable for its first-hand observations of the German Army at war, from command structures through to weapons and equipment.
