With an index of artists. Bound in tan cloth with red lettering printed on front cover and spine. In the pictorial dust jacket that has a small chip at head of spine, and a minor nickel-size stain at the bottom of the front panel. (Please see photo.) Signed by both authors on the front free endpaper. An attractive copy. Van Nostrand was the librarian for the California Historical Society; Coulter a professor of librarianship at Cal. A particularly fresh copy. Dust jacket is now housed in a clear, removable archival protector.

Very slight soiling to lower front corner, else a fine copy. Another of this author's excellent titles, packed with illustrations and reference to California art. A desirable reference which brings to light previously unpublished or little-known historical drawings and paintings. The first section provides illustrations by artist-explorers under Spanish rule. Paintings and drawings are then presented from the Mexican period; drawings and paintings by soldiers and sailors during the Conquest, etc. A major portion of the book deals with painting and drawings during the Gold Rush period in 1848 and the subsequent settlement during the next ten years. Each plate is accompanied by the title and artist, its source or collection, and extensive notes on the artist. An index of artists is provided..
