The highly influential anatomist Andreas Vesalius of Brussels (1514-64) is often credited as the founder of the modern study of human anatomy. His De humani corporis fabrica, a landmark of modern science, is best known for its iconic and endlessly reproduced woodblock illustrations of the muscular, skeletal, vascular, and nervous systems. The Fabrica may be the only medical masterwork that was published simultaneously with a synopsis prepared by the author. Vesalius designed his Suorum de humani corporis fabrica librorum epitome to serve as a more affordable outline of the encyclopedic and expensive Fabrica in what translator L.R.
