Large woodcut showing Virgil at his writing desk with his Muse at center. Surrounded by Gods Jupiter Venus Juno and others. Carthrage and sailing ships in the background. Venus and Juno with brown ink to skin likely censored. Recto with last page of preface and the large woodcut. Verso contains the opening lines of Book 1 first stanza of Aeneid. Verso also with 3 woodcut initials and a few lines of contemporary ink notes. Some minor ink blot to lower margin but overall a beautiful leaf and important as the start of the epic poem. 8.5 x 12.75 inches. Woodcut 5.25 x 7.25 inches. This edition well known for its magnificent series of woodcuts by the anonymous Late Master of the Gruninger Workshop.
