The book was first published in 3 Volumes in 1877, this copy is the cheaper popular edition dated on the title page as 1878 ( but possibly issued in 1881). The book remained a favourite with the public well into the 20th century. The novel was published nearly a century after the actual wreck of the Grosvenor in 1782 and while the novel has the same name that is the only similarity.
