Good. 24 mo. in original full tree calf covered boards 232 pp. (text is the first 222 pages in this printing followed by 10 pp. Subscriber List) The ownership signature of one John Kemp appears at the top edge of the first page of text. Bookplate from the private library of Henry F. Clark front pastedown. The binding is well worn about the the spine, especially the edges and has some other spotting here and there on the boards. The text is generally clean without appreciable foxing. Highly popular response and refutation of the second part of Paine's "Age of Reason" and his deist criticism of "revealed religion". One of the first American editions, published the same year as the British. The American edition was published by a number of American printers in 1796 with, we believe, priority undetermined.

(1V)/120pp with Ten Letters addressed to Tom Paine with theological themes.Front board is tender and partially detached, corners are badly worn, spine and boards rubbed. Dayton: R.J. Skinner, 1819. Original full brown leather. Covers worn and rubbed. text stained throughout on upper half of pages. Binding firm and tight. Good condition. Old signatures and writing on endpapers from the Alfred Brunson Family, including Alfred Brunson's clearly legible signature on the title page. He was a prominent Methodist circuit rider in Ohio who would eventually settle in Wisconsin and serve in its Territorial Legilsature. THE FIRST ACTUAL BOOK PRINTED IN DAYTON, OHIO. Ohio Imprints 519. The earliest printing in Dayton dates back to 1808 when The Dayton Repertory newspaper was issued. Advertisements exist for a hymnal proposed to be published in 1810 but no copies exist and the hymanl was probably never published. Otherwise there are three pamphlets issued prior to this book. Skinner's 1819 printing of the Watson work at 190 pages and bound in leather is the first actual "book" known to be printed in Dayton.

First edition of Bishop Watson's bitter attack against the second part of Paine's Age of Reason and deism. Watson's defense of the Bible was widely reprinted in America. Like Paine's work, it ran through many editions, well into the nineteenth-century. Seven editions alone were issued in 1796, the first year of its publication. This copy was kept by Nicholas Waln (1742-1818), a Philadelphia Quaker, a member of Benjamin Franklin's Junto, a Library Company director and a member of the American Philosophical Society.
