The essential backstory to the creation and meaning of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, one of the most important books of the 20th century--and now the 21st Since its publication more than 70 years ago, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four has been regarded as one of the most influential novels of the modern age. Politicians have testified to its influence on their intellectual identities, rock musicians have made records about it, TV viewers watch a reality show named for it, and a White House spokesperson tells of "alternative facts." Paperback / softback. New. From a Pulitzer Prize-winning critic comes an impassioned critique of the West's retreat from reason. 'The Death of Truth is destined to become the defining treatise of our age' David Grann 'The first great book of the Trump administration ... essential reading' Rolling Stone We live in a time when the very idea of objective truth is mocked and discounted by the US President. Discredited conspiracy theories and ideologies have resurfaced, proven science is once more up for debate, and Russian propaganda floods our screens. For David Aaronovitch, there came a time when he started to see a pattern. These theories used similar dodgy methods with which to insinuate their claims: they linked themselves to the supposed conspiracies of the past (it happened then so it can happen now); they carefully manipulated their evidence to hide its holes; they relied on the authority of dubious academic sources. Most importantly, they elevated their believers to membership of an elite - a group of people able to see beyond lies to a higher reality. But why believe something that entails stretching the… Leer más

Red calf spine and corners. Red cloth boards. Gilt title and banding on spine. Dimensions are for one volume. Published in 1862 by Chapman & Hall using unsold shilling parts These first editions are true collectors' examplesOrley Farm is a novel written in the realist mode by Anthony Trollope (1815–82) and illustrated by the Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais (1829–96). It was first published in monthly shilling parts by the London publisher Chapman and Hall. Although this novel appeared to have undersold (possibly because the shilling part was being overshadowed by magazines, such as The Cornhill, that offered a variety of stories and poems in each issue), Orley Farm became Trollope's personal favourite. George Orwell said the book contained "one of the most brilliant descriptions of a lawsuit in English fiction." The house in the book was based on a farm in Harrow once owned by the Trollope family. The real-life farm became a school, which was originally supposed to be the feeder school… Leer más
