Its purpose was to make the code understandable to British authorities, and to show them that it was fully adequate for application in the Bengal region.

1777. London, 1777. Half tan calf, contrasting black and red labels to spine with gilt type, orange cloth boards. Spine and corners rubbed, some mild staining to cloth; small ownership label to front paste-down. Inner hinge visible and pages are browned and there is some slight insect damage to bottom margin of pages o/w contents sound.

Halhed, a writer in the employ of the East India Company, openly stated that he translated the Gentoo Laws in order to meld British and indigenous legal systems in Bengal. This in turn would facilitate Britain's occupation of India for the purposes of trade. Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India (1774-1784), encouraged Halhed's project. .

First edition, with eight engraved plates, being an early English translation of Hindu jurisprudence. Nathaniel Brassey Halhed contributed a lengthy preface. Of added interest is a vocabulary compiled by the author and other elements: Hindoo months, names of authors cited within the legal code, and a list of books used for the compilation of laws. A curious inclusion here is a section devoted to a Hindu "account of the creation."
