Acetate wrappers are wrinkled and shrunken with age, as is typical, and show a bit of chipping and edge wear, with some separation starting between the acetate and a paper flap on both volumes II and III; acetate on volume II with light staining. Text volume illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. Full black smooth-grain leather blocked in white and silver with a design by Rockwell Kent, top edge silver, with grey ribbon place-marker; Commentary bound in black cloth with silver titles to spine and upper board, with black ribbon place-marker. Both volumes housed together in black cloth-covered drop-back box with silver titles to spine. Both volumes are in near fine condition, in like slipcase. Melville's classic story in an edition which follows the spelling and punctuation of the 1851 original, with minor emendations, and the superb 1930 Lakeside Press Rockwell Kent illustrations. In very good condition. A bright example. Initially panned by critics and readers when published in 1851, "in the 20th century Moby Dick would be rediscovered and acknowledged as possibly the greatest of all American novels" (Chronology of American Literature). The artist Rockwell Kent did more than provide the illustrations for this landmark edition—he designed the entire book. "His energy, many-sided activities and preoccupation with integrated book design made him one of the best known American illustrators of his time" (Harthan, 247).

First printing of the Rockwell-Kent illustrated trade edition, with Melville's name omitted from the front cover in lieu of Kent's, a work that many consider Kent's masterpiece. A fine balance of philosophy and comedy like DON QUIXOTE but with epic Miltonic undertones, MOBY DICK was not only Melville's most ambitious work to date, but became one of his biggest flops. By his death in 1891, the book was out of print, and would have to wait until the 1920s for a critical resurrection, one solidified in no small part by this edition, beautifully illustrated by Rockwell Kent. California: Vernon Kilns, 1940. Kent, Rockwell. A coffee pot, featuring brown and maroon transfer-print illustration of the ship, the Pequod, from Moby Dick on a cream background. Produced by the Los Angeles-based Vernon Kilns between 1938 and 1940, this coffee pot was part of a dinnerware series inspired by Herman Melville's Moby Dick and was designed by the traveler, writer, and artist Rockwell Kent. Many of Kent's illustrations reflect his love for travel and adventure, and in 1930, Kent designed the book jacket and 280 illustrations for an edition of Melville's classic novel. According to Maxine Feek Nelson, "Moby Dick" was the most popular dinnerware set that Kent designed for Vernon Kilns. Each item depicted a nautical vista, encircled by a sunburst pattern and the striped border that is characteristic of this series. Finely bound in recent full black morocco, spine with five raised bands. Red title label. The compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Single ruled gilt border on boards. Top edge gilt. Published in the same year by the Lakeside Press of Chicago in a large format, three-volume, limited edition, this trade edition proved immensely popular. It has been credited with contributing greatly to the rediscovery of Moby Dick as a classic. A fine copy.

Loose folio, twenty-six prints each measuring 22 x 16 inches. Housed in the matching green cloth clamshell case, title in gilt on front cover. Full piece measures 23 x 17 inches. Complete with twenty-six color lithographs depicting scenes from Moby Dick, illustrated by Benton Spruance. All pieces in near fine condition with light wear to corners and faint transfer of neighboring lithograph to versos. Includes text booklet with introduction and twenty-six poems by Lawrance Thompson. A vibrant and scarce piece building on the classic story told by Herman Melville.

Random House, 1930. Hardcover. Good. The Random House 1930 production with the Rockwell Kent illustrations. There are condition issues with both the book and the dustjacket, all as described here. But we think accurately priced with those conditions in mind. The corners and spine ends of the binding are rubbed with a bit of loss, a 1' indentation at the top left of the front board, the rear board is bowed inward at the top, hinges firm, light glue residue offsetting. The dustjacket is complete although it's in three pieces; both flaps are present but separated from the panels. We've re-assembled the jacket in a Brodart, and it's almost presentable. There are chips at the top of the spine and one in the middle of the spine, slits along the rear gutter, very shallow chipping at other peripheries.
