Putnam's NY, 1920 (1st edition). 4to., cloth, 217pp. Inscribed by Kent on the dedication page "and to Stephen Etnier/ this, my personal copy/ is, with affectionate regards/ inscribed/ Rockwell Kent/ 1929." Rockwell Kent's self-described "personal copy" of one of his most significant books, inscribed and presented to Stephen Etnier, then his apprentice, in 1929. Housed in Etnier's custom made chemise and slipcase. The front inner hinge reclosed, the gilt lettering dulled, else a very nice copy, with a special association and extraordinary provenance.

This copy of the second printing of Kent’s first book was marked up by a designer to be used as (or to accompany) setting copy for a new edition, most likely the Modern Library edition of 1930. The book has been disbound, the marked-up pages laid loose into the covers. (Note that most but not all pages are present; this is not a copy for a first reading!) Pencil markings indicate changes for the new format and design: text width, typeface and point sizes, alignments, galley breaks, and so on, with scattered notes and notations throughout (including at least one typographical error, an upside-down letter, caught by the designer). An unexpected and unusual survival of a process document, and clearly one-of-a-kind.

HBDJ, STATED 1ST MODERN LIBRARY EDITION, 1930, in the first issue, 190-title Dust Jacket. The book itself is Good/VG, with some LIGHT separation opposite the title page. BACK DJ MENTIONS 190 BOOKS & PRE ZIP CODE COUPON, Small octavo. There is a signature on the free front endpaper. There is almost no fading elsewhere and the illustrations are in great shape. The DJ is G/VG. There are minor tears and creases and a piece of tape across the top inside of the jacket. A small, slender hardcover book with patterned boards in a pictorial dustjacket. The book and jacket are in very good condition, just beginning to tan from age but showing no other signs of wear. The text is clean and the binding is secure. The jacket spine is faded but otherwise intact. Book measures approximately 6 3/4" by 4 3/4". Features black and white illustrations.
