Sewn signatures are secure but there is some cracking of paper at gutter between half t.p. and frontis. showing engraving of bust of Homer. Many maps and ill. by John Flaxman. Occasional neat underlining and marginalia in pencil. Blue boards have light bumping at corners and some rubbing at crown of spine panel, but gilt lettering on unsunned spine is still bright despite absence of d.j. The mark of a tea cup mars the front board.Paper fine, only mildly age-toned and unfoxed.

Odd volume ( containing books 13 - 24 ) of Pope's translation of Homer Greek epic which first appeared between 1715 - 1720. Published by subscription it was a hugh seccess for both Pope & Lintot. Samuel Johnson declared that it was 'a performance which no age or nation could hope to equal', Richard Bentley was more critical, stating 'It is a pretty poem, Mr. Pope, but you must not call it Homer'.

London: Frederick Warne, 1111. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Flaxman. From "Chandos Classics" series. Not dated. Edition and printing not known. In good decorated cloth boards wirh floral strips and squares and gilt title field with black titles to front and spine. The boards are tight, flat and quite clean. 'The Clevedon Community Bookshop Co-operative Bindery Team' have cleaned the cloth; made repairs to the spine; the mull has been replaced and the block reattached. The Binder Team have also replaced the end papers - now pale tan and very clean. Tanned and marked cut edges; stamp of previous owner on top cut edge. The text pages are firm, flat and most edges lightly foxed. Pencil annotations. B/w illustrations by Flaxman. No dedications. Page to rear has a table with numbers and dates. Good condition. Without jacket.
