John Murray , 1823. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Fair to Good Reinforced. Most of original label, some missing on the spine. Possibly a 3rd edition, 1823. Full leather original binding. Publication of 261 pages. There is gilt on the spine and on the front cover, as well as on the page edges. The boards are a little shelf rubbed. There is light foxing on the early and last pages. Half dark blue calf, raised bands and gilt tooled spine, brown label (chipped) ; marbled boards, endpages and edges. PO name to title page. Mild rubbing/wear to board edges/faces. Some foxing concentrated at front/rear. Firm binding/hinges. This is the first issue with the Doge's speech p. 151 covering five and a half lines. Pp. Xxi, 261, with half-title. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

First issue of the first American edition, published the same year as the English edition. Page 154 with 21 lines, 5 line speech of the Doge on pg 151. With half-title. Covers are chipped and worn, especially at the spine, but binding still holding. Scattered foxing to prelims.

Grey label with gilt titles, gilt bands, and blind-tooled designs to spine. Edges speckled black. Blue endpapers. Original bookmarking ribbon loosely inserted. Interior bright, though moderately spotted and foxed throughout. Endpapers toned with some discolouration. Bookplate to front paste-down, faint pencil marks to rear paste-down. Top edge toned. Some rubbing to marbled boards, light soiling to calf. Minor wear to joints and binding extremities. Very good. After visiting the Palazzo Ducale and glimpsing the shrouded portrait of the disgraced former doge Marino Faliero, Byron conceived this drama presenting the story behind his failed coup d'etat in 1355. The ploy is widely thought to have begun when the patrician youth Michele Steno carved an insult about Faliero's wife into the doge's throne.

The first edition, second issue of this work in a half calf binding, known as Randolph's scarcer Variant A of this issue. With Doge's speech to page 151 forming 11 lines, and page 101 being misnumbered 110 (Randolph, p.73; Wise II.30.). Ink inscription to the title page.'Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice' is a blank verse tragedy by Byron, inspired when he was looking at portraits of the Doges in Venice in the Palazzo Ducale, and saw that the portrait of Faliero had been blacked out. Byron's play is set in Venice in 1355, with Faliero having been recently elected as Doge of Venice, and follows Faliero through is failed coup d'etat and subsequent execution.
