First edition, 1902, hardcover with full-leather boards, large octavo, 352pp., illustrated in b&w + fold out map at rear. Book VG with edgewear to boards and spine ends, joints rubbed and worn, other rubbing, handsome gilt titles to black spine labels, binding tight with marbled blue endpapers, text clean and unmarked but toned throughout, with handsome gilt to top edge of text block. No DJ.

Book VG+ with mild rubbing to boards, binding tender with inner hinges cracked, text clean and unmarked with gilt to top edge. No DJ. Original mailer included, in poor condition with some tears, soil, and missing pieces.

Blue/purple cloth with gilt lettering to the front and 4 raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine. Decorative green/speckled gilt EPs.TEG. Other edges deckled. This copy is VG. Exterior has modestly sunned spine, spine bottom with a 1/2" closed tear, light staining to back, and modestly rubbed edges. Inside with both hinges weak, but holding nicely . FFEP has a PO inscription ( Osborne Mitchell, admitted to the bar in 1910 ) denoting his connection to various people named in the book from the 1700's and 1800's, including his grandfather, with corresponding notes in the book where those ancestors are noted.Generously illustrated with photographs, maps, drawings and tables, including a large fold out map of Washington County, Pa. to the rear.Very nice provenance !.

Top edge gilt. 4to, 352pp. plus folded map of Washington County, PA. Included with the book are two letters sgned by the author to Mr. Diffenderffer. Frank Ried Diffenderffer (1833-1920) was a Lancaster, PA historian who wrote numerous books, primarily about German immigration and life in America. Ex- Franklin & Marshall College library book, withdrawn from the Diffenderffer Alcove of Pennsylvania History and Biography. Front hinges tape reinforced. The two letters, which had been tipped in on the last free end pages, are now loose on those now separated pages.
