Pamphlet, disbound from a larger work. 20, 10 pp. Two parts of this report chronicling a gunfight and minor uprising of Cherokee in western Arkansas, surrounding the arrest and subsequent trial for murder, of Ezekiel Proctor. Proctor was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation by birth, and his arrest for murder of a Cherokee woman from a prominent Cherokee family. This is now known as the Goingsnake Massacre. Proctor had killed Polly Beck, due to her associations with a white man. The trial was held in Cherokee tribal courts, due to treaties with the US government. The US, afraid Proctor would be acquitted sent marshals to the trial to arrest Proctor. During the trial, US marshals attacked the schoolhouse where it was held, with seven marshals killed, among others. These reports contain various accounts of the attack and aftermath. Merritt's report multiple causes starting with an under-allocation of actual needs, combined with claims that the deficiency is caused by feeding visiting Indians who belong to other agencies and also some of the "northern wild tribes".
