Edinburgh: Cadell and Co, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. vi, 432pp. Volume two only. Leather boards stamped in gilt with marbled endpapers. Bookplate on the front pastedown, the top half of the spine absent and what's left is partially detached, bumping to the spine ends and corners, and rubbing to the boards, still very good with the text clean and bright. The bookplate is that of James Backwell Praed, Esq. who served as a member of the UK Parliament from 1835 until his death in 1837.

Three volume set. Quarter linen over paper boards. Colored folding map to front of Vol. I is present (see image). Previous owner's bookplates to front pastedowns and name to title page of Vol. I. Moderate foxing throughout, but otherwise a clean set with no defacements.

Hand color map is neatly folded in as published, pages unmarked with little to no toning or foxing. A nice, clean tight and attractive book. .

Matching endpapers and text block edges. Spine labels missing, general wear to extremities, especially corners. Bookseller's and former owner's labels on front pages. Fold-out map missing but replaced by photocopy. First published in 1829, Hall's Travels caused some offence to Americans due to his criticisms of American society. Specifically, Hall witnesses a slave auction and is greatly disturbed by the experience (pp. 34-40). He is not entirely pro-abolitionist, however, and his generally positive descriptions of southern plantations may strike modern readers as naive. Appendix at rear of Vol. III explains how to operate a camera lucida, an optical device used as a drawing aid by artists. Rear table shows square mileage of each state of the union.

Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1830. Third Edition. With half-title and large folding map in Volume I (lacking the folding table in Volume III). Modern half calf over marbled boards, gilt spine, raised bands, colored edges; text is slightly toned with occasional spotting typically to the first and last few leaves of each volume, map torn along one of the folds, otherwise a good copy.

Spines shorn, hinges weak, rear cover of volume 1 detached but present. vi, [5]-322; iv, [9]-339, [1 blank] pp. Rear free endpaper of volume 2 torn. Light scattered foxing. Except as noted, Very Good. A captain in the Royal Navy, Hall traveled to North America in 1828. He visited Quebec, Pennsylvania, New York, the New England states, New Orleans, the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. In his southern route, Hall describes visits to various plantations, Creek Indian ceremonies, slavery, other customs. Hall's snooty attitude toward things American annoyed his former colonials. Clark acknowledges that Hall "was not pleased with the South...[H]e found difficulty in adjusting himself to the democratic manners and rude accommodations that he found in the United States, both North and South. Stamped decorative gilt spines with gilt raised bands and gilt titles on black ground reads "Hall's North America". Spines are rubbed; Vol. I has an amateur leather patch at top left edge of spine, which partially obscures the topmost decorative raised band. the boards are lightly rubbed, but maintain their color. Internally, light scattered fox spotting. Previous owner, Henry Thorold, bookplate inside each front cover. The folding map in Vol. I has only one small split approximately one inch long at the fold; the folding chart has no splits whatsoever, just some light fox spotting. Captain Hall, a Scottish naval officer, travelled throughout much of the Northeast and the Midwest, including the Great Lakes region. His southern route brought him through Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama. He also travelled south via the Mississippi through Louisiana, and north to Quebec; his route is traced on the map. "His work contains many excellent descriptions of places and conditions that came under his observation" (Clark), including Creek ceremonies, and navigating the Mississippi. All three volumes of this complete set are in very good+ condition elaborately bound in full brown leather (calf) diced on the boards with a gilt border, three raised bands on the spines with gilt tooling and two black leather title blocks with gilt text. On volumes I and III the black leather title blocks are chipped with only minor losses to the gilt text. The edges of the text blocks are marbled. Each is a 7mo measuring 7 1/4" by 4 1/2" with an early prior owner's book plate attached to the front paste downs of each volume. Each volume also has the remains of silk placement ribbons sewn-in at the heads of the spines. Volume I contains 421 pages and is illustrated with hand colored fold-out map at the front of the book. Basil Hall, FRS (1788 – 1844) was a British naval officer from Scotland, a traveller, and an author. From the beginning of his naval career he had been encouraged by his father to keep a journal, which later became the source for a series of books and publications describing his travels. In 1829 Hall published these Travels in North America, which caused some offence due to his criticisms of American society. One is not surprised that an American schoolteacher objected to Hall's opinion that Scottish, not American, pronunciation, should be used in the classroom (Vol. I p. 28).
