London: Hogarth Press,, 1939. First edition, first impression, in the scarce jacket, of this Hogarth Press book, one of 1,500 copies printed. Planned before the war, but published after its outbreak, Rosinksi traces the history of the German military from the days of Frederick the Great through to its evolution into the Reichswehr. The author had emigrated to Britain in 1936, as, with a Jewish mother, he was forbidden to work in his native Germany following the Nuremberg Laws. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red. With dust jacket reproducing photograph of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Munich. W. Heffer and Sons bookseller ticket to front pastedown. Light spotting to endpapers, facing leaves, and edges, small patch of discolouration to top edge and rear pastedown, still a very good copy in the scarce jacket, tape reinforcement inside front flap fold and spine ends, spine panel sunned with small chips at end, price intact. Woolmer 458.
