Shows shelf rubbing of the extremities, boards somewhat rubbed, endpapers lightly foxed, slightly over-opened at the title page, occasional toning of the margins, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain distinct. As pictured.

" By the first quarter of the 19th century the synagogue of Newport Rhode Island (established in 1763) was used infrequently as the community there had dwindled. It was Abraham Touro's bequest to the legislature of the state for "supporting the Jewish Synagogue in the State" that spurred the town to safeguard this architectural jewel. Endowing the building, even when it was not in use, protected it. It would come into regular use again when Eastern European immigrants reconstituted the Newport Jewish community. Providence, RI: State of Rhode-Island. Very Good. 1798. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. The original calf covers are intact, but rubbed, as one would expect. The spine label is also intact. Owner's name on the fep (Levi Smith, contemporary with the book). Contents foxed, but very good. No stains or other damage. What a nice piece of history. I like the part of the title which states the laws were "finally enacted". Probably a good story behind that. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 646 pages .

Leather much scuffed with numerous small stains. Joints and hinges starting to crack. Minor chipping at head of spine. Annotations to front free-end page. Text block lightly age-toned and foxed. A few scattered ink annotations. Includes "An Act to Secure and Appropriate the Touro Jewish Synagogue Fund" at pp. 476-477. This act recognized the trust established by Abraham Touro to maintain the structure and grounds of what would become known as Touro Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in the United States. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine ends and corners, faint early signatures and other marks to boards, hinges cracked.
