Light foxing to first few leaves and plate. Very good. First edition. Safford is still considered the leading authority on Harman Blennerhassett in the wake of his publication of THE BLENNERHASSETT PAPERS in 1864. This volume precedes that better-known work by a decade, but it establishes Safford's scholarly interest in the flamboyant man who provided much of the capital for Burr's scheme against the Spanish in Mexico. Blennerhassett's life has been regarded a mixture of "farce and tragedy," and Safford's work maintains this caricature. HOWES S13

First public account of Blennerhassett's role in Aaron Burr's 1806 treasonous expedition to the Southwest. Blennerhassett was Aaron Burr's Chief Lieutenant on the expedition. Howes S12. Blind stamped cloth binding. Light wear at extremities. PO name and bookplate to endpaper (marked out). Light spotting. An important biography of this controversial follower of Aaron Burr who participated in and financially supported his mission to take control of Spanish ruled Texas.

Chillicothe, O.: Ely, Allen & Looker, 1850. An Anglo-Irish graduate of TCD, Blennerhasset (1765-1831) emigrated to America, presumably to excape arrest either as a member of the United Irishmen., or for his incestuous marriage. He became involved with Burr's possible treasonous ploting of 1806 (his large estate, now a state park, was evidently a headquarters for Burr). This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition, which is not common. Dark brown decorative cloth binding, heavily blindstamped. The title on the spine is gilt, as is the Blennerhassett coat-of-arms on the front cover. Clean text; 239 pages. The text is exceptionally bright and fresh, easily readable today. The corners are bumped slightly, and there are several small chips, to the head of the spine, the lower front cover, and on the rear panel. There is a small period bookplate on the front paste-down, and some penciled notes from a previous collector, on the FFEP opposite. A solid copy and a fascinating footnote to some quirky… Leer más
