Bookplate, when attached, must have been somewhat attached to front free page as some of the brown coloring of the page was removed. Something was cut out of next free page near the top. I expect it was some other previous owner name. On next free page is inked: E. Donnelly M.D. Pittsburgh, Penn, 1865. His name is again inked on the title page below the author's name. Lightly read. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark plum cloth blind decorated on the upper cover, the spine gilt lettered and decorated. xvi, [2], 493, [2 ads] pp. A very nice copy, the cloth still dark with bright gilt, minor age-wear to the spine tips and corners, small chip at the tail of the spine, without the folding map. FIRST EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT WORK ON CENTRAL ASIA. Vámbéry travelled to Central Asia as a linguist to study the languages represented there and determine their relation to his own mother tongue, Hungarian. The book is divided into two parts: the first a description of his travels, the second devoted to notices concerning the geography, statistics, politics, and social relations of Central Asia.

The frontis of 'Dervishes at Bokhara' gives some idea of the author's disguise as a dervish through much of his travels, the original goal of which was to determine the sources of the Hungarian language. Gilt vignette on front board and gilt lettering and design to spine. This copy contains all twelve plates, and the coloured folding map of Turkestan, which is creased, a few small (repaired) closed tears. The original spine has recently been professionally re-backed and the hinges reinforced. The boards show wear and soiling, but the contents are very tight and clean. A sturdy copy in very good condition. Vambery (1832-1913), an inveterate traveller and philologist, was born in Hungary. He travelled to Constantinople, where he taught French in the house of a minister and, in 1858, published a German-Turkish dictionary. In 1862 he began his trek through central Asia, often travelling in disguise (or, as an 'Efendi' or 'Dervish', as he describes himself in the Preface) in order to enter places forbidden to Westerners, or non-believers. His route lay from Trebizond on the Black Sea to Tehran in Persia, where he joined a band of pilgrims returning from Mecca, spending several months with them traveling across Central Iran (Tabriz, Zanjan, and Kazvin).
