Harper & Brothers, 1865. Hardcover. Good. in x in x in. Includes rear pocket map. Rubbing to cover edges. Previous owner bookplate on inside front cover: E. Donnelly, M.D. No. 397 Pittsburgh. Bookplate, when attached, must have been somewhat attached to front free page as some of the brown coloring of the page was removed. Something was cut out of next free page near the top. I expect it was some other previous owner name. On next free page is inked: E. Donnelly M.D. Pittsburgh, Penn, 1865. His name is again inked on the title page below the author's name. Lightly read. Scattered foxing here and ther but not much really. Binding is tight. No DJ issued. Sunned spine. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

London, John Murray, 1864, First edition. . recent red simulated morocco backed marbled boards, with silver spine title lettering, marbled edges, inscription on endpaper, dated 1878, a clean fine copy in handsome binding. . 8vo [22 x 15 cm]; xvii, [i], 443 pp, 12 plates including frontis, folding map hand-colored in outline (clean tear & split at fold), tables. . Wilson 234. Ghani 381. Sykes (History of Exploration) 246: 'a celebrated journey in disguise across Persia to Bokhara and Samarkand'. 'Of considerable value' (Baker). The frontis of 'Dervishes at Bokhara' gives some idea of the author's disguise as a dervish through much of his travels, the original goal of which was to determine the sources of the Hungarian language. His description of the peoples and their customs is most interesting. A picture of this book is available on request by email.

London: John Murray, 1864. 1st edition. Hardcover. twelve plates & folding map. pp. xvii, 443. 8vo. Bound in original gilt decorated green cloth. Gilt vignette on front board and gilt lettering and design to spine. This copy contains all twelve plates, and the coloured folding map of Turkestan, which is creased, a few small (repaired) closed tears. The original spine has recently been professionally re-backed and the hinges reinforced. The boards show wear and soiling, but the contents are very tight and clean. A sturdy copy in very good condition. Vambery (1832-1913), an inveterate traveller and philologist, was born in Hungary. He travelled to Constantinople, where he taught French in the house of a minister and, in 1858, published a German-Turkish dictionary. In 1862 he began his trek through central Asia, often travelling in disguise (or, as an 'Efendi' or 'Dervish', as he describes himself in the Preface) in order to enter places forbidden to Westerners, or non-believers. He claimed no…

Brown cloth, v. good, 493p., 12 full page wooducts, large facsimile foldout map.FIRST AMERICAN ED rebacked.Subtitle:cont.Caspian to Khiva,Bokhara & Samaracand Vambery was a Hungarian with a passion for linguistics. He was a translator for the foreign office. In 1860 he was awa- rded a scholarship to undertake a journey into Central Asia to investigate the relationship between the Magyar language and the speech of that region. Assuming the character of a Dervish he accompanied a band of pilgrims to Khiva. He was the only European traveller to successfully travel through forbidden and dangerous places. He faced four major dangers: the unknown & terrible Kara Kum desert, groups of wandering Tekke Turkomans who enslave any travellers they discover, instant death by the Khanates & by his fellow pilgrim-Hajjis if he was discovered to be a European. This work covers his treck from Persia to Karatepe, on the Caspian, Gomushtepe, Khiva, Bokhara, Samnarcand, Karshi, Maymene,…

London: John Murray, 1864. First edition, 8vo, pp. xvii, [1], 443, [1], 16 (Murray ads dated January, 1864); wood-engraved frontispiece, 11 wood-engraved plates, large folding color map (approx. 16" x 27") in pocket inside lower cover; a very good, sound copy in original green cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Wikipedia notes the details of Vámbéry's travels. In the autumn of 1861, "disguised as a Sunni dervish, and under the name of Reshit Efendi, he set out from Constantinople. His route lay from Trebizond on the Black Sea to Tehran in Persia, where he joined a band of pilgrims returning from Mecca, spending several months with them traveling across Central Iran (Tabriz, Zanjan, and Kazvin). He then went to Shiraz, through Ispahan, and in June, 1863, he reached Khorezm (Central Asia). Throughout this time, he succeeded in maintaining his disguise as "Reshit Efendi," so that upon his arrival at the Khanate of Khiva he managed to keep up appearances during interviews with Khan Sayyid Muhammad. London, John Murray, 1864. . First edition. 8vo, xvii, 443 pp., 12 wood-engraved plates, folding map at end; Original green cloth gilt, large bookplate to pastedown, a very good copy. Vambery's important Silk Road narrative of a journey through the Caspian to Khiva, Bokhara, and Samarkand. In 1861, with a grant of 1,000 florins from the academy Vambery set out on his travels, 'his major intention being to make a study of the Turco-Tatar dialects of Central Asia.' Disguised as a Sunni dervish under the name Resit Effendi, he travelled across the Caspian, through the Kara Kum desert to Khiva, where he had two audiences with the khan. Crossing bandit-infested territory, Vambery reached Bokhara where he remained for three weeks, avoiding detection by the suspicious Emir despite a lengthy 'interrogation,' and leaving laden with gifts. From Samarkand he passed through Kerki to Herat 'which he found in ruins after a recent Afghan attack,' and where he had an interview with the new ruler, the 16-year-old…
