A work analyzing beauty in women through anatomical and physiological considerations, including facial structure, digestive system, thinking systems etc. In FAIR condition. Bound in finely ribbed dark brown cloth with minor ornamentation and banding in blind. Several white paint specks present to the front cover. Moderate uneven fading and scuffing. Minor to moderate soiling. Heavy wear to the cloth on the spine, with several punctures/ insect holes in the cloth as well as tearing almost the entire length of both hinges. Some tattering and fraying to the cloth, mostly to the head of the spine, with some minor loss. Some bumping and scuffing to the extremities with the cloth worn through at the corners. Ribbed black cloth boards embossed with floral decoration and ornaments to spine and front board; gilt rules and lettering to spine. Lightest edgewear, period ink name and date to ffep, very faint foxing to endpapers and the margins of pages (unaffecting text). Text-block remains remarkably bright and clean with tight, sound binding; a very handsome presentation; very good+. An ill-advised and decidedly sexist exercise wherein the author examines female beauty through an "analysis" of their physical and physiognomic attributes. Walker enjoyed a wide and popular audience during his time and whose work was readily accepted as empirically and philosophically sound. This was the first in a trilogy dedicated to women which included: Intermarriage (originally published in 1838, see our listing for this title) and Woman (published in 1839). A couple minor spots of faded stains on the bottom of the textblock. Stamp and signature from previous owner on blank preliminary page. Moderate toning to the pages, which are very clean. Complete with 24 lithographic plates. One signature (M2) is loose, but has been reattached to the binding; remains delicate. This is one of the works Alexander Walker, a Scottish physiologist amongst many other things, was famous for; it combined physiology and aesthetics. . Second Edition Revised and Corrected. Hardcover.
