Boston, MA: Phillips, Sampson and Co., 1854. Book. Good-VG. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Brown textured cloth, unstamped, with "Shakspeare" lettered in gilt on spine panel, text block edged in gilt. Modestly rubbed edges, light shelf wear, with gilt on edges partially rubbed away. The binding and endpapers do not seem quite right for the period or match copies of other descriptions located for this edition, so we suspect this copy to have been rebound at some point -- though certainly not recently. xii,1027 pp. Contains biographical sketch, the complete text of the 37 plays, followed by "Venus and Adonis," "Rape of Lucrece," the Sonnets, "The Passionate Pilgrim," and "A Lover's Complaint," with a rear glossary. Illus. w/ frontis. portrait + 11 additonal steel engravings by H. W. Smith, with tissue guards. Frontis., guard and title page are all moderately foxed; the remaining text block and plates show only light scattered…

London: Moon, Boys, & Graves, 1832. Full Leather. Very Good binding. From the Preface: "The present collection of Shakspeare's Plays differs in arrangement from any that has hitherto been published. The Tragedies, Comedies and Historical Plays are divided; and in each division, the consecutive order of the pieces has reference to the country in which the action is laid, or to the epoch at which it is supposed to have taken place". Certainly a unique approach, coupled with printing of all of the plays as pages octavo in size and arranged consecutively, four on each folio page. Illustrated with 100 engraved plates, including two engraved portraits of Shakespeare. The Moon, Boys & Graves concern obtained the plates from the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery and the dramatic images are "depicted from the powerful pencils of Reynolds, Opie, Northcote, Smirke, Stothard, Westall, Howard, Romney, and others" [Preface]. There are as well numerous text illustrations grouped in 8vo. size. Most of the plates…
